EV readiness check
Plug-In Ready?
Electric cars can save you real money, or turn into a daily hassle. It mostly comes down to where you can plug in. Learn the basics in two minutes, then answer a few questions for an honest answer.
How the check works
Where you can charge matters more than which EV you buy. The check asks where you park, whether you can install a home charger, how far you drive, how often you take road trips and what your winters are like. It skips the questions that don't apply to you.
You get one of three answers (Plug-In Ready, Ready with a plan, or Not yet), plus the range to look for, a rough cost for a home charger and how much you'd rely on public charging. If an EV doesn't fit right now, it tells you why and points you to hybrids instead.
Think an EV could work? Switch or Stay? runs the real math on your situation, including your current car and loan.
Questions
Can I own an EV if I live in an apartment?
Yes, if you can charge at work or have a regular outlet where you park and drive under about 40 miles a day. If you would rely only on public fast chargers, an EV takes planning and can cost about as much per mile as gas. A hybrid is often the better fit until you can charge at home or work.
How much does a home charger cost to install?
Usually $1,000 to $2,500 for a Level 2 charger, including the charger, wire, breaker, labor and permit. If your electric panel needs an upgrade, plan on $2,000 to $6,000. Already have a 240-volt plug where you park? It can be as little as $400 to $800. Big-city prices often run 10 to 25% higher.
Is a regular wall outlet enough to charge an EV?
A regular 120-volt outlet adds about 40 miles overnight. If you drive less than that on a normal day, it can be enough. If you drive more, you will fall behind and need other charging most weeks.
How much range do I need?
About twice your normal day, with extra room for cold weather, and at least 200 miles. If you take long road trips about once a month or more, look for 300 miles or more. The check works out a number for you.
Is it free?
Yes. It takes about two minutes, with no sign-up and no email.
